McCall is a ski and sled area, accually more than one in each sport. Two significant points about this area is it has the best boondocking area (very large) and is high up. The base (in town) is around 6,000 ASL, while the Peaks approch 8,000. It's about an easy 5 hour drive from Spokane, figuring in winter roads and a pit stops, etc. It's definately an overnighter trip. There are several motels and other lodging in the area, however, you need to make reservations a few months in advance. If you just show up there the day before you might be sleeping in your truck. From Spokane drive South on 195 to Lewiston Idaho, then go East on 12 for about 80 miles to McCall. Earth corrdinates are 44*, 53', 40" North, 116*, 5',40" West.
When you get in town you would have passed Brundage ski area, with sledding area as well. South of town is Westmound. From town drive South on Hyway 55 for 12 miles to the little town of Donnelly and and turn right onto W. Roseberry Road. Go one and four tenths of a mile and turn left onto Norwood Road. Go one mile and turn right onto Tamarack Road. Go one and six tenths of a mile and turn right onto West Mt. Road. Go one and two tenths of a mile to the unloading area. There's a turn-around for trailers. Just follow the signs. Unknown if a permit is needed. You will be riding around the area of Councle Mt, as the maps show.
Here's two maps to cover from above Spokane, CDA down to Boise. If you want great detail you can click on either map, however as a warning they are very large files/images in case you have a slower (dial-up) connnection.
Here's a detail of the town, plus a trail map, on what was covered on the trip of mid-winter 2005. Both are clickable for larger sizes.
